The days were growing short. Hallownox was nearly upon the city of Azrah, and as always the days died quickly, making way for the three days a season where the sun was blotted out by one of the three moons The whisper of a nameless, faceless dread draped the city. Quiet anxiety settled in the faces of the market fishmongers and bakers. Kin moved through the streets quickly, nary stopping for idle conversation or laughter with one another. Instead, they moved as if harried by a cold wind. Disquiet settled over Azrah in a light layer of gloom.
Hallownox was only two days away, and the shopkeepers rallied to keep spirits high for the holiday. The scent of buttery spiced Numpkin stew filled the crisp air. Young Wilderkin crushed charcoal to prepare their ghostly ensemble for Hallownox, sure to scare their friends. Tempting pastries waited on racks for a wide-eyed Kinling to covet them, only to be reminded by their mother that they must wait for such treats. Lovers gathered at the tomb of Terranusβ princess, hoping her spirit would bless their union. Some smeared ink over their door in crude symbols meant to protect them from the spirits that would walk the streets later that night. Others carried painted portraits of their deceased loved ones with them in hopes their likeness would draw their spirit back from the veil, and that they would see them last time.
The Court of the Dead, the ominous sect living beneath the palace itself, remained mysteriously silent. Even the Steward himself, despite loathing the βnightcrawlersβ as he called them, sent a few messengers to inquire about the odd quiet.
However, when the messengers did not return, it sent a chill throughout the palace and the Steward did not inquire again, as The Court of the Dead was one of the very few clans which filled him with trepidation. One did not simply go uninvited into the Catacombs. Especially not this close to Hallownox, the three days where the skies blackened and the spirits were held back through only the thinnest of barriers.
Sepria, Arch Cleric of the Court of the Dead, stared at the reflective pool glistening in the light of the Moonshrooms that gathered and grew in the corners of her private quarters. An eerie but familiar bluish green light washed her already pale face with sickly color. Her retinue gathered outside, waiting anxiously for her to open the doors and pass verdict. Several of their seers predicted that without a heavy sacrifice this year, that the spirits would cut through the barrier and flood city streets, causing a mass panic, to say nothing of the havoc it would wreak on everyoneβs magic. For young Kinlings, who were only now starting to make a connection with their magic, a catastrophe of this size may disrupt their magic entirely, cutting them off from the Mother goddess, and rendering them magically disfigured...if not dead.
She had a decision to make, and it was not one she took lightly. When Sepria first became the Arch Cleric, she knew this day might come, the day when her huge magical power would not be enough to sustain the veil, and that sacrifices would need to be made.
A sacrifice of magic.
And there was no more potent magic in the world than life. Sepria sighed, shoulders tense. The doors to her quarters opened, and the Arch Clericβs eyes were sharp and hard as ice when she gave the order in a clear, cold voice.
βLocate appropriate sacrifices. Ready the altar. Tonight, we seal the veil.β
