The Hydra is a mythological monster of Ancient Greece. According to Hesiod, the Hydra was the offspring of Typhon and Echidna. It possessed many heads and it had poisonous breath and blood so virulent that even its scent was deadly. In truth, however, the actual Hydra of Lerna was an Orium dragon.
Their unique breath weapon is a gout of toxic vapor, which then coalesces into a snake-like construct that keeps on fighting on its own after being exhaled which is what gave rise to the false idea that the dragon has multiple heads. In canonical Hydra myth, the monster is killed by the Greek hero Heracles who used a sword and fire to sever the multipe heads. Though it seems more likely the Orium dragon simply moved lairs or died a natural death.
