The new Matt.
Lots of time spent trying to make his face look right - I'm still not sure it's exactly how I want it. Practice, practice, practice.

I have to admit, I was sorta dreading the style change a bit when you showed that you'd be moving into a more realistic style. But now that I see an example of it all finished and cleaned up, I have to say, that I really do approve=3 Can't wait to see how the rest of the characters look in your new style.
Unfortunately, I have to agree with a few of the comments above... the new style certainly makes him look a lot happier (it's a cleaner style too, so he looks sleek), but that's not totally reflective of Matt's character... he needs a little bit of that grit to him. Maybe it's a function of the pose and smile, and all my problems will go away when I see the new Matt in a more sullen pose. But for the moment, I just feel like it's the smallest of steps backwards.
His facial expression makes him look like someone...*suggested*...he pose like that.
Like he's hesitant and the photographer went "SHUT UP AND SMILE!" or something. ^^
Now if you'll excuse me...
*picks up the brown tabby bodily, throws him over my shoulder, and spirits him away*

I very much like how the legs and chest turned out! I'm thinking that maybe you might have made his ears too small? Perhaps enlarging them might help you get more of the expressive face that you're going for. And this one I'm not so sure of, but maybe some form of eyelids? That might have something to do with why his expression seems stiff or forced, because it looks like he has his eyes open as wide as they possibly can be.
