Furry Family
This is a really personal piece for me, so no fiction. Just the truth.
These two animals – Sophie; the jackrussel, and Mew; a feral. They’ve saved my life – both metaphorically and literally.
I’ve had Mew for thirteen years. He was a rescue, a tiny kitten that really shouldn’t have been away from his mother. Either we had him, or he was to be drowned. So we had him. A month later, he broke his leg. We were broke, struggling, but we still managed to scrounge enough together to get him fixed up. I don’t know if he realises that – but he’s always seemed grateful.
Now, he’s old. He pulls at his fur, meows super loudly, and his leg clicks when he walks. But he’s my kitten. Whenever I walk into a room he’s in he’ll meow to get my attention, and lean in for lots of cuddles. He will quite literally throw himself over my shoulder and nuzzle into my hair. I could never have asked for a better cat.
Sophie joined our family five years ago. My brother turned up and dropped her into my arms, and it really changed my life for the better. I didn’t want a dog, I was terrified that I was too depressed to give her a proper home. Zodel convinced me otherwise. Convinced me to connect with her. I’m glad I did; she’s the softest dog I’ve ever met. She’ll drop herself purposefully so you have to catch her, holding her up like a meerkat. She cuddles into my chest every night and keeps me company despite the nightmares, the night terrors. When I’m trapped, she’ll lick my fingers till I can wiggle them again. And when I’m sick, she keeps me company. I’m incredibly lucky.
Lapres has done an amazing job with this piece. I feel blessed to have such a wonderful piece of art to show my love and connection to my pets. They really are my everything; its only right that they also exist with the sparkly, sheepy me. We’re one and the same, and they’re such a huge part of me.
I’m grateful to have my family.
