"I want a duppy!" the little green gritter yelled at his mother.
"Excuse me?" his mother said, a little surprised.
"I. Want. A. Duppy!" the gritter youth spat. "Get me one!"
"Why do you want a duppy?" the mother-beast asked.
"Your job is not to question me! Your job is to keep me happy! Now GET. ME. A. DUPPY!"
The mother gritter tilted her head one way, then another, and with a sigh, said, "Oh, they do grow up so fast." She slithered out of the family cave to retrieve what her son had asked for.
A short time later, she returned, pulling behind her something huge. "Here you are, son. Just as you asked. A duppy."
The tiny green creature ran up to the duppy to inspect it. The duppy just sat there, a great grin spread across its face, its miniscule wide-set eyes staring blankly.
"Duppy, roll over!" the gritterling told it. The duppy just sat there.
"Duppy, play dead!" the creature shouted in the large monster's ear. The duppy continued to sit.
"Duppy! Let me ride on your back while you fly!" The duppy refrained from doing anything that was not closely related to sitting.
Becoming angry, the little gritter kicked the duppy in the leg. "Get up! Do something!" The duppy stared ahead, smiling its simple smile.
He walked to the duppy's tail and stomped up and down on it. "You have to listen to me! Move, you giant tub of goo!" The duppy kept right on smiling.
Finally, the gritter crawled onto the duppy's giant, flat head, banged his tiny knuckles on its brow, and howled at it, "YOU STUPID BEAST! YOU'RE MINE! DO AS I SAY!"
At this point, the gritter's mother, who had been watching the entire thing unfold, nodded almost imperceptibly at the duppy, and closed her eyes. There was a small wet sound, a small "eep," and then, nothing.
Except the sound of a sated duppy picking little gritter scales out of its teeth.
"Ah, well," the mother gritter said, shaking her head sadly. "I suppose it's time to start a new batch. This one turned out all rotten." The duppy just stared ahead at her quietly.
"Honestly, you'd think he'd have learned after he saw you eat all of his brothers and sisters."
In answer, the duppy's smile seemed to widen just a bit. It turned and waddled out of the cave, knowing it wouldn't have long to wait for another meal.
