After the conclusion of the campaign involving my little tiefling, Kaius Veritasi (perhaps deserving of an end-of-campaign portrait?), the online group I was part has started up a whole new story. And so, I have a new character!
Arlan Falkeris is a former thrall, rescued when the "nest" he was kept in was raided. He, and others like him (those who survived), were subsequently placed in captivity in a human city until they could be rehabilitated. This was more or less successful, at least for a while. After a year on his own, things started slipping downhill again. Arlan doesn't remember much about his time before or during his years as a thrall, but every night brings nightmares, and his erratic behavior led to him being in and out of prison cells in the few years since being reintroduced to society. This came to a head when his activities led to the murder of two individuals - an act he claims is accidental - and upon his arrest, there was the question of whether he should be placed in prolonged captivity (which was not the preferred option for the jailers, who were quite familiar with him at that point), or whether he should simply be "put down."
But then, a third option was presented - be recruited into a particular organization of monster hunters, bringing his skills and particular "insight" to the table, in exchange for his life, as well as the opportunity to learn more about what happened to his family - and to himself. The choice was an easy one.
For those who are curious, Arlan is a sorcerer. ^_^ Well-intentioned, if a bit squirrelly.
