Ever notice how, in any of the games he appeared in, he never has a proper blacksmith workshop? Doesn't even have a kiln -- He just keeps hammering that old anvil of his, whenever you're around. I suspect he's not actually a blacksmith, he just needed an excuse so he doesn't have to go out and help you fight all those monsters.
That's fine with me, I'd also much rather hang out with him and do some "smithing".
