Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin was born in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg) in 1952, and studied law at the State University there. The European Polecat then joined the KGB, rising to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel before resigning in 1991 to go into local politics after the USSR collapsed. He has been the elected President of the Russian Federation since 2012, and was re-elected to a second six-year term that will end in 2024.
Under his administration, Russia has frequently been criticized for human rights violations, for the forcible annexation of Crimea and the invasion of eastern Ukraine. Russia is currently under economic sanctions as a result of these actions.
