”I’ll get it!” Kye called to the kitchen as he headed for the front door. This week they were supposed to have Odin for the weekend, so that Bree and Arashi could get some time for themselves. Kye was always happy to see his son and take care of him. What he couldn’t handle was the looks Arashi send him every time they meet, and he knew why he got them.
During the last few weeks at the compound, he and Bree had been part of a breeding project. The goal had been to produce offspring with desired powers from both parents. He and Bree had been the first couple as the scientists had wanted to see if the child would inherit Bree’s strength and his manipulation over energy. Neither of them had volunteered for it, and they had both been under large amounts of drugs. None of them had wished for this to happen.
Sadly, Arashi didn’t seem to see it that way. It had started when Bree had gotten her memory back and told her mate about it. After that there had been little more than cold air between them every time he and Arashi meet. With the compound and the personnel gone, the last one the storm-maker had to blame was Kye. To some degree Kye was glad that his hostility was only targeted toward him. Arashi loved his mate and Odin too much to ever harm them. Or, at least, not knowingly.
He sighed. Whether his sibling knew it or not, his anger harmed those around him. It made it unpleasant to be around him when both he and Kye were in the same room. Although he had gotten better at making his hostility less obvious it was still in the air.
As he opened the front door, he was greeted by a little white cub. “Kii!” Odin cheered as to give Kye’s leg a hug.
“Hey there little man. Ready for a weekend of fun?”
“Uhu!!” The little Anthro answered over exited.
“Okay then, go say hello to Evelynn. She’s in the kitchen.”
As Odin ran inside to greet his aunt, Kye turned to greet the person who had delivered his son. Normally Bree was the one who followed Odin over here, so Kye was both surprised and a little uneasy to see Arashi standing at his front door. The Orange cheetah stood with his arms crossed as he sends Kye an empty look. “We’ll go get him Sunday.” He said to Kye.
His mouth felt dry as he answered. “Yes, we’ll take good care of him. Say hello to Bree from Eve and me.”
He was about to close the door when he heard the storm-maker cough. “Well… uhm…” Kye looked at him. He did not look directly at kye, instead looking everywhere else around him. “I… was hoping… If we could have a talk.”
He looked at Arashi and then nodded. “Alright. If you come around Sunday-“
“Now.”
His look was now fixed at Kye. With some effort he continued. “Please.”
“…Okay. Come in then.”
A few minutes later the two Anthros sat in the sofa. Arashi sat to the Kye’s left with his arms crossed, while Kye had been given Amy on his way past the kitchen and now sat with his daughter in his knee. For a long moment there was an awkward silence between them.
Kye coughed. “Soooo… What did you want to talk about?”
Arashi did not answer; instead he kept his eyes fixed on the turned-off television across the room.
After a while Kye began to get irritated. “Look, if you have anything to say then get out with it. I have oth-“
“I’m sorry.”
“What?”
Arashi swallowed. “I’m. Sorry.”
Again silence. “Did Bree send you here to apologize? Because frankly….”
“I’m sorry for how I have treated you the past few years.” The clone seemed to relax a bit after he had spoken. “I’m sorry for what discomfort I have brought on you and Eve.” Again silence began to lay heavily in the room, only broken by the mutters and play of the small cub in Kye’s arms.
“Sorry to say this, but that doesn’t sound like much of an apology. Just coming here and say sorry like that? You didn’t even look me in the eyes.” Normally Kye would avoid speaking like that to Arashi, as he did have a temper. However if he was here to apologize for his behaviors, then at least he could show remorse too dammit. Kye expected to see Arashi’s fur begin to spark static electricity, but to his surprise he was met by a defeated look in his eyes.
“Look, I’m sorry okay? What happened between you and Bree was out of your control. I know that. It’s just…” He looked away, shaking his head before returning eye contact.
“I fell in love with Bree long before she was sent to Mars. I’ve felt closeness to her even before we really began our team training. I’ve always wanted to protect her. But…” He looked away again. “When they were on Mars, all I could do was to worry about her. I could barely sleep. When she came back, she had changed. What she saw up there…” He lowered his sight and now stared at his feet. “She still has nightmares you know? Now only from Mars, but also from that… ‘Episode’ between the two of you. She can handle it now, but still, it hurts me to know that no matter what, I can never help her past a certain point. I can never understand what she has been though. You too, for that matter.”
He looked up at Kye again with a sad look in his eyes. “When I finally learned the truth about her pregnancy, I saw red. She was at the compound at the time, I could have saved her, protected her. I should have.” His eyes became distant. “But in my heart, I know that I couldn’t. They would have killed me if I had disobeyed. Even if I had known what was going on, what could I do…?”
He shook his head slowly, the distant look in his eyes still present. “The compound is gone and so are those that did this to her, to you. So the only place I could channel my anger, my fury, was toward the person who had... Fucked her.”
Kye noticed a nerve twitch under the orange anthro’s right eye.
Arashi sighed. “I wanted to see blood, but you’re family. I would never spill the blood from any of my siblings, so instead I just hated you. In the beginning I wanted to hate your Offspring too, but… When I saw Odin lying there, small and helpless in my arms... I couldn’t hate him, I wouldn’t. I won’t.”
Arashi straightened up before he fell heavily back into the sofa. “So I just hated you even more. I didn’t even notice how it affected the rest of the family.” His next words refused to come out and Arashi had to swallow a few times before he could continue. “Bree just wanted to move on, so with the rest of you I can imagine. But me, I kept ripping up old wounds. I let my anger affect my family indirectly. I didn’t even know before Odin began to hide from me every time the two of us had met.”
This time Kye sent a sad look to Arashi.
“That was the first time that my own anger directly hurt myself and I realized just what I was doing to those I love.” He let out a grunt. “Suppose I now know why wrath is a sin.”
Silence spread though the living room. Even the noises from the kitchen had stopped Kye noticed.
Arashi stretched his back as he corrected his seat. “So that’s my apology. I hope it was better than the first one, for honest to god, you won’t see me open up like that anytime soon.”
The white furred cheetah nodded. “It was. And I’m sorry for Odin to be frightened of you.”
Arashi shook his head. “’S was my own fault, I should have known that children would be affected easily. Then again, none of us have had any parental models to rely on. Unless you count Collins and Maria, in which case we’re all fucked.”
Both males laughed a little at this.
“Maria was a gentle soul in a coldness existence.” Kye said as he corrected his grip on Amy.
“And Collins was the mayor of jerktown.” Arashi added. “At least I caught my own mistakes before it seriously began to affect the boy.”
At that moment Odin entered the living room. In his hands he had a drawing he had just spend the last few minutes drawing on the kitchen floor. As the child stood in front the two males, he looked from one to the other a few times before finally going over to Kye to show him his drawing.
Kye sent a sidelong glance to Arashi as he made a show of admiring the drawing.
The storm-maker sent back a sad glance. “Like said, my own fault.” He said as he rubbed his hands between his knees. He was surprised to feel something holding onto his pants and as Arashi looked down, he could see Odin hugging his leg. The child’s head was laid upon his knee. Arashi could’t help to let some tears escape his eyes as he took up the cub and started hugging him. “I’ll be going now, okay? You stay here with Kye and Eve, mom and me will come for you Sunday.”
“U-kai dad.” Odin answered.
"I love you Odin." Arashi said in a low voice, almost a wisper.
After having said goodnight to Kye, Amy and Odin, Arashi was soon at the front door and was walking down the steps when something took a hold of his shoulder. Looking back he could see Evelynn standing in the door. The light form the hall almost seemed to illuminate his old team leader. “Omni…”
“Thank you.” She simply said with a weak smile on her muzzle. “Thank you for letting go. You have no idea of how much it has pained him of constantly being reminded of it.”
He smirks sadly. “I can only imagine that he’s having just as rough a time as Bree.” They stood there for a moment, letting the wind blow in their hair. “Look, I was a jerk…”
She laid a finger on his snout. “Your apology was sufficient. No need to repeat it.” She said with a smile.
He smiled back at her. “Good night Omni.”
“Good night Mjolnir.”
As Arashi walked home to his mate, he felt as if a weight had been lifted from him, as if the anger he had let go of no longer pulled him down. He smiled as he began to hum an old melody. Bree would be happy to hear that he had finally been able to forgive Kye, and himself, for what neither of them had been able to control. He nodded to himself. With number two on his way, he was planning to do a better job this time around.
