St. Christopher, the patron saint of travelers, is often depicted as having a dog head. The reasons for this are varied, but the most popular being that he came from a land of dog-headed, cannibalistic people before he sought Christ and renounced his heathen ways. Upon baptism, this is when he was said to have gained human appearance. I've depicted him here as a wolfhound..because..well, I like them XD
This scan doesn't show it but the lighter parts are actually gold paint.
This is the only art I've ever made that I'm actually going to hang in my house!

Nice work, though I prefer the wolf-headed version of Chris myself. Mostly due to the amazing way that version links in with the medieval/Renaissance Eastern European legends of the Benandanti -- werewolves who traveled to a "land beyond the sea" where they fought the Malandanti, witches and demons, in order to save the harvest from being stolen away. Chris would have made a great patron for them, I think.
This is great work, Thornwolf.

Is this patterned after Orthodox iconography? If so you did a good job; the highlights and shading on his clothes and armor look pretty spot-on. -Although I think the hands and face may have a little too much detail/depth.[/nitpick] Is there any particular reason for the green background, instead of gold or blue?
I nabbed it from an old old old version of a st. christopher painting, which I believed was some bizarre morph of greek and cyrillic, to the extent of what I read. It's aesthetic, I'm not passing it off as authentic, but I did copy it from somewhere. Heh, it's probably total Engrish XD
Hahaha, awesome. My training with the alphabet is mostly Russian with some Serbian peppered in for good measure, and what I make of it is this: Kristofora. The first and third letters are rather strangely shaped for what they are supposed to be, which makes me inclined to agree with you that it's got some Greek influence.
I care about things no one else cares about omg. :C
Regardless, the aesthetic looks quite nice!

Oh man, I found this again after talking about it to a friend and just wanted to tell you how much I still adore this, and wish I'd been able to nap the original with the gold paint. I love the necklace I got instead, and wear it all the time. I get compliments at church about it as well! Our parish priest thinks its pretty cool.
Amazing as always. <3

Thornwolf,
Thanks for putting this piece in the FC'2013 art show. I was on staff and talking a bit with you of this painting and the fact you had kept it for your living room, made me decide to buy it. All the more no one else seemed to want to, kept it within my reach.
I can't see myself hanging art that is too blatantly furry in my place, but this one fits the bill: stealth and very artistic. Non furs will gawk at your rendering :)

Oh wow thank you so much! I'm so very happy he went to a good home, and I'm sure you will get many a nice and fascinated comment about it as I did when it was hanging in my home (which also has zero furry art hanging in it, haha).
If people are ever curious, the dog head is in fact canon due to a mistranslation. I have a dog headed St. Christopher medallion hanging in my car XD more stealth furry. Here's a little bit about it.

Thank you again and it was great talking to you!

You know, I'm not too surprised: it reminds me of art you could find hanging in british pubs or old bars in france. Maybe it is part of the reason I decided to buy it ^^. Somehow it reminded me of something familiar.
Keep up the good work, and maybe do more of these. If you need inspiration, maybe you can consider remaking famous old art... For example the epic Bayeux tapestry, or some chinese market scene?

This is an awesome work! I heard about the story of Saint Christopher myself and I also made a pic related to it:

I love this! Thank you for sharing. I actually got a St. Christopher medal with a dog head on it from an independent seller a billion years ago. I have a few St. Christophers but this is the only one with a dog head. I thought it was super cool to see out there "in the wild".
