Saving
A few weeks had passed since Jack and Rachel realized who they really liked. The vulpine didn’t yet know how to go about getting to the point of asking the bob cat out. However, Yuki quickly figured out that Jack liked her. “Don’t worry,” the second male told him. “I won’t say anything to her.”
“Seriously, how do you do it?” the first vulpine asked. “I know you want to ask Maddie out; so how do you even know how to do something like that?”
Yuki shrugged. “Everyone is different dude,” he replied. “I mean hell, when I first thought of the idea I was scared to death by it. You’ve seen how she’s grown up. But even though I’ve never really asked anyone out, it’s a matter of confidence. I mean yes, the worst that could happen is that she could say no. But if I don’t take the chance, someone else will. And it would kill me knowing that I missed my chance because I didn’t say anything.”
Jack barred his teeth and let out a growl. The thought of Rachel being with another male got him jealous. “Yeah, I get your point,” the vulpine stated.
“Look, homecoming is coming up. I’m going to ask Maddie to that and maybe that’s where it’ll happen. You should do the same for Rachel.”
“You know what? Good idea. I’m going to do it!” the first male declared. What his friend had said was the push that Jack needed. Then something struck him. “Although, since when did you get so wise on asking out? Maddie will be your first if that works.”
“Well…” the second vulpine mumbled and blushed. He then cleared his throat. “My mother found out and talked to me about it. I don’t know how she knew, but somehow she did.”
Jack gulped as he hoped his mother Topaz wouldn’t notice like Jade had with her son. But he was still going to tell Rachel. And it helped that by this point, the vulpine had a car and he was driving. Which was why he offered rides to school for the school friends. They all took him up on this offer. But Yuki and Maddie preferred to be next to the other in the back. That was perfect since Rachel wanted to be in the seat next to Jack. After seeing this seating arrangement happen a few times, Jack got hope that maybe the bob cat felt the same way about him as he did with her. In addition, the female had joined the lacrosse team and loved it. This meant some days she wouldn’t ride back with the others in Jack’s car but they understood. Also notices about Homecoming were coming up and the vulpine still hadn’t asked her yet. It was hard as every time the guy tried, something would interrupt him, or his nerve would fail him. But fate didn’t turn her back on Jack. For something then happened that would allow him to ask the bob cat. It all started four weeks before Homecoming. The male had noticed that a number of guys had already asked her to it, but Rachel had told them no. That made him hopeful that he would be the one to go with her. Which was why today the male was going to ask her today. Rachel wouldn’t be riding home with him today as it was for Yuki and Maddie as Jack had to pick some stuff up after school. “Listen, I need to talk to you about something, I’ll call you later, okay?” he told her.
“Sure, can’t wait,” the feline replied. She then went off to lacrosse practice while the rest of the friends went their separate ways.
A couple hours later found Rachel walking back to her home since she lived close by the school. However, a sense of unease came on her. The female stopped and turned her head. There was nobody there and yet she had the nasty feeling someone was watching her. Just then from behind some bushes, a male came out, clearly another of the students. “Can I help you?” Rachel asked, but on guard.
“You’re Rachel, right?” he asked, walking up to her.
“Yes, what do you want?”
“Not much. Just wanted to ask you to homecoming.”
“No thanks,” she replied, taking a step back as the male was still coming towards her. His charming face then got ugly.
“I don’t think so Rachel,” the guy threatened. “You see, I get what I want. And you will go with me.”
“I’d rather die,” the bob cat growled, backing up further.
“Why? Because of that Jack? Please. I’d be much better for you. None of us can understand what you see in that guy. Why not break things off with him?””
“Why the hell should I?!” Rachel snapped, taking her backpack off to fight. She had taken some defensive classes with Jack so she knew how to defend herself. Just not at the level or Nicholas and Topaz, or Yuki, Jade, and Paul.
Just then another male came out and grabbed her arm. “GET OFF!” Rachel snarled, trying to shake him off. She managed to do so but another male came out and got her.
“Hold her boys,” the first guy said.
Just then a car came pulling up, screeching to a halt and a door flew open before slamming shut. “GET YOUR FUCKING PAWS OFF OF HER NOW!” a familiar voice shouted.
They look and saw who it was. “JACK!” Rachel exclaimed.
He was over the hood of his car and grabbed the guy holding her. He was taken off guard and found himself on the ground. The other two came in and the vulpine and bob cat quickly took care of them. Those two didn’t hurt the other male students as best as they could, just get them away from her. “Let that be a warning to you and the others that Rachel isn’t someone you can just take,” Jack growled when he and her were finished. “Otherwise, you’ll have to answer to me.”
He and the bob cat then got in his car and drove off. The male’s fur was still fluffed up and he was growling with anger. Rachel now had time to think what had happened. She smiled and blushed, her heart calling out to the male. It had just been like when he had helped her when they were kids. Then the male finally calmed down enough to talk. “Are you okay?” he asked her.
“You’re timing was perfect,” the female replied with a smile.
“I’m happy to hear that. I’m just glad I got there before something bad happened to you.”
“Well I’m happy you came to help me. I really appreciate that.”
“Well hopefully nothing like that happens again.”
“I hope we don’t get into too much trouble tough,” Rachel commented, looking a little worried.
“Hey, there’s two of us and we know what happened,” Jack stated. “Plus we didn’t hurt them that badly. And even if we do, it’ll be worth it. I’d rather be in trouble then let anything happen to you.”
The bob cat smiled and then the two talked about what had happened at her practice. They then reached her house and Jack got out of the car first before opening her door with the sun beginning to set. “Thanks for the ride home to,” she said with a smile, bringing her backpack with her.
“Yeah…” Jack had made up his mind on the way home and then went for it. “So… I did say I would call you about that thing I wanted to talk to you tonight. But I change my mind; I’ll do it here.”
“What is it?” Rachel asked, encouraging him.
“Er…” He blushed. “I was… I was wondering…”
“Yes Jack?” He then mumbled his question and fast so the bob cat didn’t hear him and got confused. “Uh… what was that?”
The male took a deep breath. “Sorry… It’s just Homecoming and I wondered if you wanted to go with me to that…?”
He was red in the face now. But Rachel smiled up at him, bringing him in for a warm hug. “I would love to,” she replied happily.
Jack breathed with relief, hugging her back. She felt so nice, warm, and soft in his arms. “Oh! Okay then!” the vulpine said. “Great!”
Rachel pulled back to look at him, her arms still around his body. “Then I’d better let my folks know to get ready for it,” she said.
“Yeah, we’ve got some work to do since it’s coming up.”
“But before that… I still need to thank you for helping me back there and for asking me…” Rachel leaned up, kissing him on the right cheek in the exact same spot she had when they were kids. The female pulled back, red like he was. “Goodnight Jack…”
“Goodnight Rachel…” he replied in a whisper like her. He saw her walk back to her house with her stuff, looking back to him again before going inside. The vulpine touched the spot, both teens just reeling how things had taken such a turn and grinning like idiots. Now Jack knew it wouldn’t take much to hook up with her. All that was needed was for him to take that next step.
