The things one sees when you're walking . . .
Sort of between the Embarcadero and Fisherman's Wharf is this sculpture, called Skygate. It was made by sculptor Roger Barr in 1985, dedicated to the memory of a fellow named Eric Hoffer. Some people might recall the name; Hoffer was a longshoreman by trade, and a poet and philosopher by avocation. He's best known for his book The True Believer, an important work for anyone who wants to be conversant in what motivates humanity in large groups.
