Right next to the Red and White Fleet dock were the submarine USS Pampanito (SS-383) and, just beyond it, the Liberty ship SS Jeremiah O'Brien. Both ships are maintained in operating condition, and there was a sign advertising that youth groups can even spend a night aboard the sub (in the crew quarters, one might surmise). Hopefully the food's not WW2 C-rations.

But you got to See it! In fact you got a lot closer to the USS Pampanito than I did during my last trip to San Francisco. It's always been a dream of mine to one day visit the City just to take in the various museums, especially those that deal with technology which helped shape the city into what it is today.
I'd gone to Little Rock back in 2005 with my father. There was a WWII era submarine there that I'd wanted to go on, but my father didn't so I didn't as well.
I'm not sure if I'm claustrophobic (I don't think I am), but I'd love to see the interior of one.
After all, I think one of your characters stated in Sub Rosa that "It takes a certain amount of crazy to serve aboard a submarine." (not a direct quote BTW).

Pampanito played the fictional USS Stingray (SS-161) in the comedy film Down Periscope (1995). Kelsey Grammer stars as the Stingray's captain, Lt. Commander Thomas Dodge, and the film is set in Charleston and Norfolk harbors on the US east coast. The action scenes use a combination of a special effects shooting miniature for the composited underwater scenes, older Pampanito color stock footage of her under power on the surface, then submerging, and newly shot footage of Pampanito moving under tow in San Francisco Bay while venturing past the Golden Gate Bridge.[16] It had been fifty years since she sailed under the bridge.

Ah! This definitely brings back memories!
When Vrghr was a much, MUCH younger wuffy and still in active duty, he took a tour through the Pampanito. They issued interesting little radio headsets which would give narration about various items and aspects of the ship when you got next to them.
Definitely NOT a tour for the claustrophobic! There were some very tight squeezes through areas that were allegedly main passageways! And you certainly needed to mind the "head knockers".
