I did it in Flash. I read you were just learning Illustrator (although you're pretty great at it already), so if you haven't tried Flash yet you should! Flash is abooout the same as Illustrator, except instead of bezier curves, so alot of people prefer it. It's got fewer features, but what I do is draw it in Flash then export it to Illustrator if I want one of their crazy effects.
That Z volume cyclopedia is SO HARD TO FIND!
