This is the sailboat Mermaid, on display in the Maritime Museum. In 1962, Kenichi Horie became the second person to sail solo across the Pacific in this craft, going from Tokyo to San Francisco - where he was promptly arrested.
Why? Well, at the time there was no precedent for leaving his home country by boat, so he didn't have a passport. And no money either, and what English he knew was sharpened up by listening to the SF Giants baseball games on the radio when he got close enough to catch the transmissions.
He didn't stay arrested for very long. When the Mayor found out, he had Horie freed, issued him a 30-day visa, and gave him the key to the city.
Horie's still alive, living in Japan and has made several other solo voyages.
