We had to make soundscapes for class. This one is of a library or computer lab. Feel free to treat this as stock art and use in whatever project you want, just give me a shout-out if you do. If you'd like a lossless bounce then I'd be happy to send it.
Here's the original submission document:
Soundscape project
NAME WITHHELD TO PROTECT MY INNOCENCE
Subject matter: Computer labs
Recording info:
Recorded on a Roland EDIROL R-09
Low-cut off
Stereo mode
Mixed in Logic Pro 9
Monitored on AKG K77 headphones
Production notes:
In order to provide a greater amount of control over the perceived "size" of the sound, and to introduce more interesting textures, I overlapped multiple recordings from different computer labs each with a different set of frequency manipulations applied. All samples have some level of low and high-end rolloff applied, but ones from the busier labs have a slight boost to the presence range in order to make voices and keystrokes slightly cleaner. In addition, some recordings were made closer to high levels of activity than others. These recordings ended up making the "top" layer of sound from the immediate proximity. Other layers of lower activity play more quietly and with more high frequency energy removed.
It took a surprising amount of EQ work to get all the computer fans to a point where they were not extremely annoying. Some had really odd, distracting frequencies, to which I applied notch filters, removing them almost entirely. Also I was pleasantly surprised with how effectively I was able to edit out certain sudden clipping events, like sneezes close to the microphones. I was able to crossfade the samples on either side of the noise well enough that I couldn't locate the edits by listening after, even when I knew exactly where they were.
I tried to keep the recorder fairly close to keyboard level, while preventing it from coming into contact with anything vibrating significantly (which to my surprise was almost everything). Also I did my best to choose locations where people were being reasonably animated. I used a few different locations relative to the centres and sides of different sized rooms as well to provide some variety, and to give me a chance to experiment with the change of apparent space introduced by nearby volumes blocking some angles.
