I drew this for Bark's sketchbook on Myra, the female archaeologist from Talespin. I figured someone that would go into such a dusty profession might have odd interests as a child, like tarantula plush dolls.

I love the idea of the tarantula plush, and yours even comes in green! :)

I wish I had the skill to make plushies. I mainly like the tarantula because it is a backpack, and I collect plush backpacks, especially if they are unusual or large. If I had the talent to make plushies though, I would be making raccoons, lemurs, red pandas, skunks, foxes, ferrets, and anything I could make look cute and in odd colors.
All it takes is the ability to sew, some material, and lots of trial and error. Having a few patterns helps to get you started though. If you want to make something custom and want it to turn out good you sometimes have to make a rough sculpture first then you can use fabric tape around that to make your pattern pieces.
Of course, if I actually try to make something, I think my priority would be a fursuit of my character. I do have a basic body pattern. One of these days, the right combination of room to work, time to work, materials (money) and motivation will come together at the same time. Life is often a non-stop stream of interesting and fun distractions though. :)
It's a little harder with a full fursuit. It's alot harder to get together enough materials together to sculpt a custom shaped body. Best to start with a basic bodysuit pattern then you can tighten and loosen seam lines to customize the shape you want. Building off a duct tape dummy is a must if you want it to fit good.
