This is a fantasy history meant to be used as a backstory for the world I have created for playing Dungeons & Dragons. It is in no way complete, nor entirely accurate.
Part one, the reformation.
The world was first inhabited by elves who ruled over great forests and plains without opposition or competition from other races or from monsters. They did not exploit the land and its resources, nor did they spread far and wide to exert their rule.
It has been told by sages and speculated by scholars that this world may be described as having a shape like that of a grand tapestry. At some point there was said to have been a mysterious battle somewhere on the unseen side of this tapestry world, between at least two great foes.
As one of these foes was slain, its body was thrust against the reverse of the world with such force that the impact caused an entire mountain range to spring up from the land, nearly dividing the world into three. For an entire week the ground quaked as the mountain range formed into the shape of a slain dragon.
It was a short time after this that the other races and monsters began to appear throughout the world. From the far east humans came with three kings and a queen to claim the lands there. Dwarves came from deep underground with their king claiming the mountain as theirs . And from across the waters to the west, came hobbits in boats who quietly settled down and went nearly unnoticed.
Each of these races had no prior knowledge of the others, and so could not discern them from monsters, and prepared to wage war.
Part two, the war that almost was.
The kings of elves, dwarves, and humans brought forth great armies ready to destroy each other, while hobbits merely fortified their settlements. Before the battle could erupt, several rainbow creatures who had brought the races safely to the world stepped in and halted the forces.
As the rulers were responsible for the engagement, the rainbow beings summoned forth a being from darkness, and commanded this one to place a curse on any who hold the power or position of king from that day forth.
Since then there has been peace between the four races, though there are still plenty of monsters who threaten life and order to bring forth death and chaos. The rainbow beings remained to watch over the world from resting places near their races, while the ironically nicknamed king of curses took sanctuary in deep unknown places of darkness.
The rainbow beings can be described as gods, but they resent being worshiped as such. For the elves there is a giant woman with rainbow colored butterfly wings. For the humans is a unicorn with a rainbow horn, mane, and tail. For the dwarves is a beholder with each eye a different color of the spectrum. And for the hobbits is a swan with feathers of every color imaginable.
