She's both wrong and right. If you take dialect into account then the Spanish spoken in Central America is different than the Spanish spoken in Spain. So considering this she isn't entirely incorrect.

I guess if that's what they want to call it. Usually, when a dialect or accent is taken into account it's labeled based on it's location not the race of the people living there. But, hey, if they want to call their dialect "hispanic" then it doesn't affect me at all.

There are different dialects, calling it hispanic just erases the differences between all the cultures. Colombians and Mexicans both speak Spanish but different dialects.

Yeah, same with Puerto Rican and Dominican. They all have different dialects, so saying that they wall use a Hispanic dialect doesn't really cover them. These kinds of accents and dialects would likely be referred to by their common locations instead of just being called Hispanic. Obviously, they speak Spanish, but we're talking about what to call their specific dialects. Like how in the US we have North Eastern, New York, Southern, Texan, North Western, Urban, and I think Californian, though I can't be too sure about the last one.

There's a new guy at work from the Republic of Georgia who's only been in the country for 10 years. When I first heard about the newcomer, he was only referred to as "That Russian Guy" by co-workers. When I finally had the chance to introduce myself to him and really talk to him, I mentioned about that "Russian Guy" reference. He bristled at that, explaining the cultural, ideological and philosophical differences between Russia and Georgia. So, yeah - gets back to what you said, Mazed.

Knowing so little about this chick that Misty works with, I just know that the racist rednecks I'm forced to suffer with at work use "Mexican" as generic, derogatory term for all Latinos, regardless of where they originally came from. They hate immigrants and criticize them for "speaking Mexican," even as these semi-literate a-holes can't even speak the King's English properly themselves. Maybe this chick is a flat-out bigot.
