True story.
I visited Shenandoah National Park last year and drove along Skyline Drive, only to arrive in the midst of torrential downpour, so I never actually saw much skyline during my visit. So instead I decided to hike Dark Hollow Falls. It was a nice enough hike, at least until I turned a corner to run face-to-face with a black bear. We stared at each other for about a minute. It was about the size of a large dog (like a mastiff), so I thought it was a cub and would flee soon enough and I could continue on my way. Then two little bears (about the size of dachshunds) jumped onto a tree nearby. At the same time, their mother, evidently tired of our little standoff, turned to a tree trunk nearby and gave it a massive, single slash of her claws.
That was my cue to run. Which I did.
This was the second most dramatic encounter I have had with a bear.
