Even though they have a sequential order, the Discworld series doesn't follow the same characters in this same order. This book, Equal Rites focuses on the difference between wizards and witches. A girl, Eskarina inadvertently inherits the power of a wizard, which can normally only be passed on to the eighth son of an eighth son. Esmeralda "Granny" Weatherwax tries to steer Eskarina towards being a witch, but the magic in her needs to do wizardry. But alas, Ankh-Morpork's Unseen University won't allow a female student; many a clash between Granny and Cutangle, head of the University.
