I took some artistic liberties creating the story of this character and basically he and his lover have become immortal due to magic. Although they are very strong and used to get involved in a lot of issues that endangered their friends and environment, over the centuries those they cared about all disappeared and they slowly retreated to the ocean where Zaris, the character in the artwork, was born and rarely show themselves, only to appear when their home is endangered by poachers and others that are doing the ocean and everything that lives in it harm. Since no one knows them and rarely anyone has lived to tell the tale when they appear, they've become somewhat of a legend, or myth, rather. According to the myth that is being told they are a spirit protecting the ocean. They are believed to be one person who takes on different forms, while in reality they are two people with magic abilities who simply want to spend eternity together without being interrupted. It's kind of a bittersweet story.
