I have been working on trying to update my custom Flygon maw design to make it more insectoid overall. In my view, Flygons are draconic bugs rather than insectoid dragons, though perhaps there's less of a difference than one might expect (that's a different story).
Anyway, some features that may be visible in this design:
The maw now has mandibles which operate independently of the other jaws. The mandibles are attached to the upper jaws but are able to press against the lower jaws and open in sync with them.
The maw retains the 'hollow retractible tongue' concept, in that a flygon's tongue should be similar to the proboscis of a bee. The Flygon can use this tongue to drink water or other fluids like a straw, or to breathe when the mouth and throat are otherwise constricted, such as during swallowing.
The jaws other than the two mandibles and tongue are split into four parts.. upper right, upper left, lower right, and lower left. Each part can flex independently of each other and each part can open both vertically and horizontally, allowing a Flygon to swallow surprisingly large prey.
