Skyrim: Hero's Welcome
"I have often dreamed of a far off place
Where a hero's welcome would be waiting for me
Where the crowds would cheer, when they see my face
And a voice keeps saying this is where I'm meant to be
I'll be there someday, I can go the distance
I will find my way if I can be strong
I know every mile would be worth my while
When I go the distance, I'll be right where I belong
Down an unknown road to embrace my fate
Though that road may wander, it will lead me to you
And a thousand years would be worth the wait
It might take a lifetime but somehow I'll see it through
And I won't look back, I can go the distance
And I'll stay on track, no I won't accept defeat
It's an uphill slope
But I won't loose hope, 'till I go the distance
And my journey is complete, oh yeah
But to look beyond the glory is the hardest part
For a hero's strength is measured by his heart, oh
Like a shooting star, I will go the distance
I will search the world, I will face its harms
I don't care how far, I can go the distance
'Till I find my hero's welcome waiting in your arms
I will search the world, I will face its harms
'Till I find my hero's welcome waiting in your arms."
-Go The Distance by Michael Bolton from the Hercules OST
He'd sat for what seemed like the longest hours of his life atop High Hrothgar underneath the protection of Paarthurnax's great, tattered wings as the rest of what seemed to be the world's Dov waited with shallow breaths for a victor in the world to come. Odahving perched nearby, her sharp featured head turned northwards just like the rest of the dragons, watching with their greater senses a battle he could not comprehend.
There was no guarantee she'd come back. Paarthurnax had warned him. She was in the lands of the dead now, fighting for the living, even for the Soul of a Dragon, that was a hard journey. And yet he hoped, staring out into the cold of a Skyrim day, he hoped.
A clap of thunder louder than any he'd ever heard, a death scream from worlds away, and he turned to his former draconic master and asked breathlessly, "the World Eater...is he?..."
"I cannot say for sure, boy, I can sense much, but that is even beyond me."
Minutes like years passed and then he heard a sound like a gasp rise up from the reptilian collective around him. A burst of light falling from the heavens. Surely an answer. Who had triumphed? The Dovahkiin or Alduin?
Soon, he had his answer, his hope rewarded. She landed before him, all ferocity and wild power, fire spitting from between her great fangs. "I am the Slayer of the First and the Last! I am Iona, Born of Dragons, who would challenge me?"
The other Dov, having waited to see who they would follow into their future shrunk back, averting their gaze and dropping their proud heads. Paarthurnax seemed to not breathe. Ulfric shook his head and called out her name, rushing forward from underneath his master's wings without fear.
"Iona! It's me!"
All anger, all power seemed to drain from her icy blue eyes, and a warm returned. Slowly, she lowered her head, still smaller than those of the other dragons present, and pushed her muzzle against his face.
"You came back," he repeated through sobs, holding her head tightly against his own, "you came back."
Another scene redraw this time from Spirited Away of Ulfric and Iona. Always thought it'd be cool as shit to have a one time shout where you could turn into an actual dragon. Oh well, that's what fucking fanfiction is for, right?

Awww, man! XD For a while there, I thought I was reading spoilers for the game! Would be so cool if the final battle happened that way! Someone may have to mod it in so we can play it. =P
Wonderful piece of artwork and writing! It seems fitting that he'd be waiting for her return, even if part of him knew she might never come back.
