Nights in Pure Heart Valley were silent and peaceful, save for the gentle breeze and the rustling of leaves. Every Sweetypie was sleeping either quietly or soundly in their homes, shut away from the continued discreet activities of the outside world. That wasn’t to say that everyone was asleep at this time, though.
On top of a distant cliff was a wooden house, home of the valley’s sheriff and his deputies which served as their headquarters. Inside, both deputies, Badgerclops and Adorabat, were sound asleep. They looked rather adorable with their eyes closed and being in slacked positions, especially in the case of Badgerclops on the top bunk. In the middle bunk, Adorabat hung from underneath the top bunk as a normal bat would. Only a dormant smile graced her face. On the bottom bunk was the sheriff Mao Mao himself, but unlike the other two, he wasn’t sleeping. He sat slightly upright on his bed, his arms crossed over his chest while his eyes were narrowed in an expression of threatening bitterness. He held a tight-lipped scowl the whole time. He was reminiscing of an exchange between himself and his brother Bao Bao that had happened earlier in the evening…
Outside the house, a fourth figure laid on his side on the grass just in front of the front steps of the porch, close to the Aerocycle. Bao Bao, the tan and peach-furred canine, curled himself up on the cool grass in an effort to get some sleep, but he hadn’t drifted off just yet. Instead, he took out the Amulet of Borflagon from his pocket and opened it, staring into it with a tired and melancholic expression. As he looked at what was inside, he thought back to what had happened between him and his brother Mao Mao earlier in the evening…
Bao Bao had just presented to Mao Mao the Amulet from the cave where both brothers parted ways many years ago. He was going to offer it to the black cat as some sort of token of good will and even reconciliation-he hoped he could fix things by sharing his most precious memory hidden inside, but said cat brother wasn’t hearing any of it.
The moment when Bao Bao held up the little treasure towards the other brother lasted about a minute, but the response was instant, quick, but painful. With one fell swoop, Mao Mao whipped his hand into Bao Bao’s own, knocking the Amulet out of his grip and sending it bouncing onto the ground with an audible ding. Bao Bao was startled by what Mao Mao had done, but he quickly scrambled to the ground to pick the Amulet back up. He seized whatever remaining chances to offer the Amulet to Mao Mao again, but his cat brother had started walking away before long. Bao Bao had tried to convince him of his own good will, but all he got from him was a refusal to see the dog’s memory. Mao Mao told him outright:
“I’ve already seen you at your worst. What’s one more bad memory of you for the road?”
Bao Bao met Mao Mao and his friends again later when it was late and time for bed. Both brothers remembered times when they shared a bed with each other when they were little. The dog hoped that maybe a night together would do better at bringing back memories, but Mao Mao wouldn’t even let him inside despite protests from Adorabat and Badgerclops. So Bao Bao was spending the night outside on the front yard, as humiliated as any dog would’ve felt.
Bao Bao sighed as he looked at the Amulet for comfort. Mao Mao fumed as he tried to remain tucked in bed. It was going to be a long night.
