A very happy birthday INDEED to my friend on deviantArt, Collon28 (http://collon28.deviantart.com/)! A talented writer and aspiring artist, and also a very good, clever, honest friend, too, a proper sound guy. Go wish him many greetings, I tell you. GO!
Anyway, I've been doing "anthropomorphic portraits" of all my good friends on dA for their birthdays, so of course this was to be expected, but in this case I actually got a few requests ahead of time ... Basically he really likes the Canadian Lynx, so I did him as one, complete with the mad ear-tufts - hence the fact I had to extend the finalized lineart at top and bottom cuz I just couldn't fit it in WITH the tufts on a sheet of A4 when I was sketching it ... DAMN my limited scanner, I wish I could scan A3 stuff. It also meant I couldn't put in a tail, since lynxes have these stumpy little things ...
Not that I'm ranting, mind you - this was PROPER CHALLENGING, which was just what the doctor ordered, methinks. Anyway, he also asked that I portray him with his fedora hat ... which therefore, together with his love of trenchcoats, sent me off on this whole Dick Tracy/Indiana Jones 1930s vibe with the costume, which then ended up earning some beatnik elements thanks to his spiky haircut. And then there was the SWORD, which was TOTALLY out the left field ... but overall I actually had loads of fun putting this together, at least once I got it all worked out, and so in the end i got something I'm pretty pleased with. Hopefully our boy will be too ...
