Commentary for June 3, 2019:
Happy Pride, everybody!
So, continuing with what I started for Pride last year, I’m going to be doing a drawing of an LGBTQ+ character who appears in my comic, Eon’s World for every week of June.
First up we have Sally Acorn, a somewhat late addition to Eon’s World, actually. A version of the character did appear in the original sprite comic, but only as a visitor from a parallel universe for very brief occasions. However during my early attempt at remastering the original series last year, I decided to change that and bring Sally and all of the Freedom Fighters from the Sonic comics (more or less) in as regular recurring characters. Although this version of Sally is based largely on the character from Archie Sonic, she is not a princess. By the time of Eon’s World Vol. 1, she had moved on from leading the Freedom Fighters and was now a member of the Meridian government, who would later be elected Meridian President. By the time of Vol. 2, Chapter 8, she has been elected as the first President of the Terran Union.
The reason why Sally is first up for Pride this year is because, in Eon’s World at least, she is incredibly gay. “But I thought Sally was into Sonic,” I hear you say? Well, she was in Vol. 1 of Archie Sonic, but even then, I got some big queer vibes from her, especially in her interactions with Nicole. Besides, after the reboot, Sega put their foot down on the whole relationships thing and said characters from the Sonic games weren’t allowed to do romance in the reboot. However, we have confirmation from longtime Sonic comic writer, Ian Flynn that he planned to explore a romantic relationship between Sally and Nicole in the Archie Sonic book. Sadly, it was cancelled before he got the opportunity. But, when I heard that this was his plan, I felt inspired to run with it. Does that mean Sally and Nicole will be an item in Eon’s World one day? Maybe, but what I can confirm that it means for certain is that Sally is most definitely gay in Eon’s World, where I have made it my mission to MAKE IT GAYER by increasing the LGBTQ+ representation in the series.
