Pauvre petit. Just a little bite, barely three years old when Elijah/Abijah died. I know this was hardly uncommon, long before influenza, consumption (tuberculosis) or even a very bad cold or viral infection could be kept from not only knocking you halfway to death's door, but merrily push you beyond it. I wonder when I see stones like this, did Elijah have any brothers; perhaps the youngest of them, who didn't have the strength to get through something that might've gotten into the whole family, but he alone was claimed in life by it? Do any of them have descendants today, these two-hundred and thirty years later, who might someday see this stone and not realize they visit the grave of one of their distant kinsmen? Always the wonder for me, beyond the horror and grief of mortal deccession.
