The thick blanket of freshly fallen snow muffled the intruders' sounds as they snuck up on an unsuspecting merchant wagon. Though the spectral lights danced in the skies above, the forest floor was shrouded in the sort of lingering Midnight that invited bad news for anyone passing through. The faint smell of smoke and flickering light from a nearby clearing signalled their target's whereabouts. As the would-be-thieves prepared to strike, an unseen projectile buried itself in the ground near the leader's feet, muffled by the deep snow. The second wouldn't miss.
