Wesley is a fairly intelligent feral bird, more so than most corvids like him because he has the capacity to read in any language that is taught to him. Unfortunately for his pride, he has the capacity to only understand and be reasonably fluent in one language at a time (apart from cawing), every time he learns a new one he has to forget the old one. He can read at maximum speeds of 15 words/60 characters per minute.

He uses this limited skill to advertise his services as a part-time familiar, full-time boarder, the service being his literacy. This rarely ever interests more anthropocentric potential employers, but many animals who want to be more adept at magic but aren't as linguistically talented as he is will find the prospect of hiring him to read their tomes and manuals appealing. That is how he came into the employment of Willemina, but that's a longer story for another time.
