In talking to a friend of mine, who's a giant MMPR fan, he's apparently spoken at-length with the writers of the show at conventions, and they'd had plans for Goldar, had the show's budget not run out. They were going to reveal later in the series that Goldar, in the face of Zordon's genocide, had a glorious moment of cowardice, grabbed the ally nearest to him (Finster), and teleported them both out. Finster was hit by the wave as they were teleporting, and was turned into a human (this was Saban's fancy way of saying "His suit fell apart and we're too cheap to replace it. They were just going to have his voice actor play the role on-camera).
Deciding to make the best of a bad situation, Goldar was going to use Finster's knowledge of science and magic to attempt to revive the evil in Lord Zedd so he could reclaim his rightful role in the universe.
Personally, I would've loved to see this...shame it never came to pass. But it makes me happy knowing they're not dead.

Really? I had never heard of that before, sounds kinda interesting, especially since Finster was the only other cool baddie early on. I only just wanted to see Goldar alive, make a comeback to the butt-kicking badass he used to be, maybe even switch sides, since I was a huge sucker for the baddies changing into goodies later on (Jindrax and Toxica being arguably my faves in that area). They brought back previous rangers sometimes, even even a couple villains like Trakeena and Vypra, and they totally dropped the ball with Goldar, could've brought him back in Dino Thunder since Tommy was there, and I know some people speculated that Zeltrax was Goldar. Shame, really.
The main reason the old villains didn't make a comeback? And it was completely avoidable? Saban used the costumes until they, quite literally, fell apart. They were unwilling to pay for a makeover for everyone when the wear and tear on the foamrubber was becoming too much. Rito's suit fell to pieces due to lack of use, and they didn't have him repaired in time to use for Countdown to Destruction so they just opted to leave him out. Baboo's suit fell apart and they ended up using a suit from the Live Stage performance for him in one of the episodes he cameoed in later. Finster was in the process of falling apart in his last appearances (they couldn't even get his ears to stand up anymore, which was why they were glued on upside down and made to look like they were just folded back).
I'm sure Goldar was suffering the same fate. Which is really a shame because I think they could've gotten more mileage out of the old bad guys.

I fully agree. I mean, come on, they had a whole slew of their own original bad guys such as Astronema, Trakeena, Mesogog, Elsa and Gruumm, and even the good sidekicks such as Piggy, Phineas and Norg, their own original mooks such as the Quantrons, Sting Wingers and Tyrannodrones, and even made a couple redesigns to the Green Ranger suit when used early in Dino Thunder. Considering all of that, makes one wonder just what kept them from designing a new suit for Goldar to be able to bring him back for the fans of the older seasons (plus adding more depth to stories using a villain from way back). Hell, they could've done the same for Scorpina, just to fix up one of the biggest cop-outs of the series when she just disappeared without a trace after returning for that one episode with Zedd.
I really, REALLY wish they had aired "Zordon, I shrunk the rangers". Not only did Scorpina make a comeback, but they finally tied off that flapping loose end regarding hers and goldar's relationship and just finally let them be a couple.
Unfortunately, the gal who played Scorpina dropped off the face of the planet, nobody could find her, and they didn't want to do all that just to have her never appear again. Another one for the vaults *sob*

That's a real shame they couldn't find the actress who played her. Though it does make one wonder yet again why they couldn't just find a new actress. The one actress who played her in that episode with the Zedd comeback, she didn't look that much like the actress who played Lamie in the original japanese version, so they could just find another girl and pull off some spell explanation like they did Rita when they got a live acterss to play her as opposed to just voice. In a series like this, if all else fails, the best excuse you can give is "a spell".
Goldar is still to me the one villain who deserved a chance to regain his glory, and Scorpina was the villain most disrespected in the story of the show with how badly her character got dropped. It's such a shame that over the years, the show never took a chance with them, to fix what they damaged and to give something to us old-school fans. They still remain my favorite couple in PR history, unofficial or not, even though I admit that Goldar's very apparent crush on Kimberly in both the series and the movie (at least in the mexican spanish dub that I grew up with) always made me smile, since I'm a huge sucker for Beauty/Beast type of things. It would've been very interesting if it had been Goldar wanting Kimberly as a bride rather than Zedd in that one episode. lol

Yeah they were given a lot of room for character development and never really did anything with it. For the villains and rangers both. Its kinda sad.
I was personally carrying the little flag hoping Finster would take a look at the absolute joke Rita/Zedd's team had become when they were stuck in the mobile home and defect to the rangers. He was really all that was carrying them as far as plans went anyway....and they seemed to lean more toward helping the rangers as time went on. He probably enjoyed feeling needed after so long being pushed around, though.
Ah well.
Crayfish is looking to get Disney's permission to publish an extensive guide to the MMPR universe since he's compiled so much information over the years from the show, the writers, and such. He's going to be discussing it with them at Power Morphicon this year, he says so let's hope for the best. Maybe we can both have some closure given :)
