gee, dunno. people confuse me and my fursona for being female, because my nickname ends with an "A". the fact female lions don't have full manes (and only headhair human-style if the res. artist decides so) apparently doesn't mean anything. :)
personally, a full male mane would include sideburns and possibly an extended full beard. maybe that's why I took the guy for a lady. :)
