I think this might just be Rhoda's hold on Julia slipping. The Black Idol probably doesn't want Julia talking to anyone else and regaining her independence. Also... I think it's likely that the price Rhoda paid was being *cut off* from the Black Idol. That would be a fundamental loss of "humanity," given that everyone in this universe seems to just be an exposed portion of the Idol.
