It is actually a slightly sad anime, but its sad parts are important to give its message regarding moving forward.
Although Donkey is not as aggressive like Kamina, he has that determination in addition to being the mentor of a promising boy, and yes, Simon despite his insecurities, managed to save Kamina. Donkey sees Diddy as his nephew despite having no blood relationship, Kamina also treated and introduced Simon as his younger brother (they also had no relationship), however the big guy always supported his little friend, encouraged him to be braver and that he will try to value himself more.
