Brewery: J.W. Lees & Co. Ltd.
Name: Harvest (Ale Matured in Port Casks, 2015)
Style: British Barleywine
Origin: England
Bottle: 9.3 oz
ABV: 11.5%
Appearance: Like unfiltered apple cider
Pours: Had negligible carbonation to worry about.
Smell: Port -of course- and spices.
Taste: I suppose one could compare it to the alcoholic beverage known as apple pie albeit with a bit more caramel than apple. The alcohol has a bit more of a buzz in this one than the previously sampled JW Lee’s barleywine and comes out as more opinionated in comparison but still manages to get along; Usually. Like Igor Stravinsky’s ‘Rites of Spring’ it breaks all the conventional rules of what should and shouldn’t be in a piece of music (or in an ale), and doesn’t care about the panicky, shocked can’ts and shouldn’ts shouted around it.
Mouthfeel: The sharp sting of alcohol is a sharp jab riding atop a discordant chord of skirling spice and caramel. A devil’s interval of flattened fifths for the tongue, but in the hands of their master brewers or a musician is made into a beautifully powerful statement.
Rating: 9.1 This beer is, multi-faceted and complicated. Sometimes it’s a smooth delight, sometimes the flavors, well, they don’t get along, but they still manage to work together. A superb example of ambassadorial statesmanship in a bottle.
