This one is a bit of odd inspiration that's been sitting around for a while. In the context of this piece, "Perry" of course, is nothing more than cider made from pears instead of apples, and a well known commercial brand of Perry in the UK is called "Babycham".
One apocryphal story about Babycham is that it just so happens to be the last drink that actor Oliver Reed consumed before he expired at the end of an 'ill-advised' drinking contest on Malta towards the end of the filming of "Gladiator". Perhaps Russel Crowe was too busy: "Makin' music an' makin' films an' fightin' 'round the world!" to have stopped it from happening...
The idea of the 'final drink' or the 'drink before the war' also reminded me of the apocryphal story that the last words of Picasso were: "Drink to me, drink to my health. You know I can't drink anymore."
Two musical influences that are likewise twigged by those two concepts are Paul McCartney's song: "Picasso's Last Words', and Sinéad O'Connor's song: Drink Before the War.
