Cultivation or meditation is a long and steady process that every mage has to go through to increase his mana pool.
Many items or artefacts can be used to gather more efficiently the surrounding mana and speed up the process.
Consumables like mana crystals are really sought after. These crystallisation of raw power can represent years of steady meditation for mages.
However, one should always be careful with the kinds of crystals used. The most controversial, dark crystals require to have a strong will power.

These crystals eat at the very souls of those using them in exchange of great powers. Many are the ones who got lost through their greed and thirst of power.
The only remnants lefts are empty husks with a bigger dark crystal inside.
