In the Oakland Cemetery in Taunton, there is another grave of a Mary Linkon who died along with two more siblings a year or so later. The stone appears to have been carved by the same hand.
As we have discussed before, many of the 'professional' carvers did quite well, financially. A single stone could bring more than a good horse. That puts their services out of the reach of the hardscrabble farmer eking out a living. My own mother's mother never had a stone; I spoke with the funeral home that handled the arrangements and 90 years on, their records only indicate an area in a 'Potters' field.
