With every sweet thing, there's a sour thing that followed. After I let them get a rush off of sugar and caffeine, I lead them toward the train tracks and out of town. After we got out of town, the sugar crash kicked in, the caffeine wore off, and the just got mellow. Mellow, but not quiet. I'm glad that Serina didn't talk or got affected by it, but Emile and Cynder just whined the entire time.
"My paws are so sore." Cynder would say, "How much farther?"
"MUCH farther." I told her, keeping eyes to the tracks, down the hill. "We're gonna go until the train comes."
"Can't we just rest for a moment?" Emile asked, "My knees hurt."
"Time spent waiting is a waste." I said, "We could end up at a gas station or some other town by the railroad if we just keep going."
"Please?" Cynder asked, "I'm really tired."
"Get use to it." I huffed, "We can't get a car or get on a passenger train out of town. Walking on foot is all we got left, and I've done this all my life.."
"But we're not you." Emile said, "I'm a kid, and I'm so exhausted.."
"I walked across the entire continent, when I was your age." I Growled, "Just deal with the pain like I do, and suck it up." Then I pointed to Serina, "She's got the idea."
"Please, just a few minutes.." Cynder whimpered
I didn't want into them, but I was starting to crack. I looked ahead for some kind of land marker. "You see that cluster of trees up there?" I said, "When we make it to that cluster, we can rest. Okay?"
When that was heard, they started to walk a little faster than before. I ended up walking them another half-mile before resting, and then we took a seat on the hillside. They lied in the grass, even Serina, and I watched the tracks, below to know when the train was coming, during our short, twenty minute, break. I finally barked at them to get up, and we started walking again. It didn't take long for them to start whining again, but I just started to hold my muzzle shut. I only started talking to them when I heard the tracks rattling.
"You wanna rest again?" I said, "Then you better start running when I say." Then I started walking down to the tracks.
A couple minutes later, there was a train that was going where we were going.
"Alright, Start running!" I shouted and ran after the train, I'd look back every now and then, and the kids kept up their pace with me and the train. I was going a little slower though, to get behind a train car, and then I jumped for the ladder on the back of it. and then I hung onto it. "One at a time, take my hand!" I reached out a hand, and the first to come was Serina, she went from running to sprinting and she reached for my hand. I grabbed a hold of her hand, then pulled her up to the ladder. I let go when she started climbing, "Hurry next one!"
Emile ran past Cynder, she had started to slow down, "It's getting too fast!" She called, she shouted something else, but I couldn't make out what. The train was rattling more and I had to focus on Emile. He was slower than Serina was and had to jump in order to take my hand. I pulled him onto the ladder then looked back for Cynder. There wasn't a sign of her though, she wasn't even beside the tracks.
"Up here, Watch!" I heard her call, and I looked up. "I Did it! I got on the train!"
"Well, I'll be..." I said and climbed up the ladder, "You climbed onto another car, on your own. That's impressive, kid." climbed up and met her on the roof of the train cars with the other kids, "Jump over, It's time we got in a car!"
I opened arms and helped her jump over to us, then I opened the top hatch of the car we were on.
