[Sketch] Neciss
This is what three years of drawing comics does to you. On the right, my previous attempt at
drawing this town. On the left..
This sketch depicts the human city of Neciss, one of very few human settlements on Illum,
the planet from which Ayola (the white cat lady) originates. The settlement was established
soon after the humans crash landed a generation ship that was launched from the original
Earth, long before humanity began colonizing space properly.
The ship holds hundreds of thousands of sleeper pods with humans destined to settle on a
new world, a few thousand years down the line, and the pods’ timers are locked.
The surviving crew and waking members decided to settle in and protect the ship, constructing
Neciss as a port town to explore the world around them. Twenty or so generations later, the
town serves as a shipping and trading hub.
The observant may notice the unusual building in the center, as well as the one to the left of it.
These are built from materials salvaged from the ship, in an attempt to construct a beacon to call
home for rescue. Whether anyone will ever respond is impossible to tell, and the signal will take
hundreds of years to reach Earth.
Guess we’re making ourselves comfortable for a while.

Interesting how humanity went back to the dark ages in that little town. One would think they’d have blueprints and knowledge to work metal on an industrial scale to create a more modern looking town. Though I guess prosperity does breed jealousy and raiders would surely want to steal from them... Many interesting plot points you can do from this perspective alone.
Also your work has definitely improved, loving it all the time

Their area of Illum doesn't have much metal to work with, if any at all. Everything is built from stone and wood as a result, except for the salvaged materials. They've also been living on a space ship for hundreds of years, so a nice stone town has a lot of charm and comfort to it.
Even if they had materials, they would need the tools and machinery to not only work the metal, but also to dig it up. And they would need power and energy to run this machinery.
Meanwhile, you can work stone and wood with minimal tools. It's probably just more feasible to build out of stone and wood, at least until you've established a good population that can handle trying to advance further.

Interesting. The original image has some decent quality in spots like the houses and ship, but most things that could be considered a background are rather lacking. The newer image is less detailed in those areas, but seems to have a consistent quality as well as more variation. Clearly, the new one is better, but there's also some huge style changes too.
