You know what? I should introduce Quentin here. He's been lurking around my doodle files for months now, and got an entire sequence on twitter. But hasn't been shared to my more stable galleries yet.
So let's start with a preggy Avaline, and her ghost ex-boyfriend!

Essentially, Quentin and Avaline were both held prisoner by James together, as a torment technique. Intending for the two of them to fall in love, or at least survival desperation with each other. And, they did. They came to find comfort and safety in each other. Regardless of how tortured they were, there was warmth in each other's grasp. They spent many long days just talking about their lives, what they wanted to survive to experience, and how they came to "love" each other.
But, James is nothing if not an embodiment of gluttonous cruelty- He gave Avaline an ultimate, eat Quentin herself, or Quentin will be taken away by James, and live a long and terrible life.
Avaline accepted, and consumed Quentin as painlessly as she could. But by this point, their emotional turmoil was so much, Quentin endured in the veil. Becoming a spirit following Avaline wherever she went. Even if she couldn't sense him, he haunted her. Until at last she settled in her cabin, and slowly, Quentin's presence becomes more felt... and... well... eventually he started getting his ectoplasm into her :P

You know, Aveline is a monster. She has killed and eaten people. No getting around that. but it's stuff like this makes me feel like she could one day maybe get better. Or at least, I dunno, have some form of self-improvement. She is, in the end, a victim herself. A victim of her kidnapper James, and a victim of her own trauma and warped mental state as a result of that.
Some of the best monsters in horror media are tragic- creatures that are tormented by their bodies, by supernatural forces, and never had the chance to be anything else. Sometimes craving a normal life, sometimes desiring to just be at peace.
Avaline made bad decisions that led her into a downward spiral that just kept getting worse. And by the time she began to mutate into a wendigo- it was too late. Her very body now needed human flesh to survive.
