I was thinking there was maybe some mature-ish symbolism going on here. Like maybe the flower was kind of a semi-suggestive feminine symbol and the relationship with it to the other aspects of the piece was trying to make a statement about something related to femininity. Although from your initial response, I think maybe I just totally missed on that one.
