Text dump, from a 2005 edit of a 1999 entry about Precambrian rocks. Image is of plutonic rocks, bodies of once-molten material, frozen deep underneath Oklahoma's volcanic belt. Canopy on top is volcanic rocks of 590 million years ago. Scale is 3 miles tall by 50+ miles wide (squint). Most of topmost mile or so has been worn off in the last half-billion years.
The following bit is about places older than Okla-land: the Archean cores of the continents.
****************************************
This is the oldest place, the base of continents, the center;
The very floor of Earth's long count of time,
Across three billion years it hasn't moved from here.
Broken up without being demolished,
Folded, faulted, pulled apart without being melted,
Squeezed through all possible combinations of temperatures and pressures
A nameless central mountain beneath a rolling nameless sea;
The stars that shone upon it vanished
Back to gas and metal droplets
Down the long hall of Universe
Before the Eon ended.
Distinct tracks from indistinct forces,
Tectonic engines long abandoned,
Heaped and rusted in the hills
Recipes for hotter, younger, shallow-crusted worlds
Oceanic Mars rising turquoise in the East,
A deeply different-looking Earth under a familiar moon.
