Matthew ran as far as he could from that alley, but only ended up in another alley, behind a dumpster. He sat on the ground right and hugged his legs close, shaking.
"You were in defense that time, Matthew." Brian said, "It's like back in Spokane. You were protecting yourself, this time you weren't the bad guy."
"What's wit yer word'in, Brian?" Lass asked as Matthew buried his face, "We may 'ave 'fended off muggers, but we still are te murderer from te gas station!"
"I know," Brian said, "I'm just trying to stay factual. I know we never killed someone in Spokane, but we've been attacked there before. Street-fighting was a backroom sport."
Matthew just listened to them bicker while he lifted his head up, he sighed and sat there, resting his hands at his sides. Then he noticed that his hands were white again, He lifted his hand away a bit and it was grey, another white hand was under it, like a ghost. Matthew gasped and scrampled to the other side of the alley. Turning around, Matthew saw the figure that was sitting where he was. It was an artic fox that looked a lot like him, it even wore the same attire as him. The to differences were that he was white and dirty, and his eyes were blood shot.
"Guys?..." Matthew whispered as he stared at it, "did any of you see him there before?"
"No, who is thae?" Lass asked, voice was a little shaky, "A ghost? They do exist. There was one in our dorm... No, is thae our ghost?" Then in a blink, it was gone. "Brian, halp us, we are both freak'in oot!"
"Why is our fur so grey?" Brian asked,
"What?" Matthew asked, and looked down at his tail.
"What does thae, 'ave ta do wit anythin'?" Lass barked, "We now 'ave a ghost following us!"
"I'm serious though," Brain said, "We're an arctic fox; our fur is white in winter and brown in summer. Why are we grey?"
Matthew stared at his tail and then back to where the other fox was, "Were we always this way?"
"No, I've got memories from when we were in Spokane." Brian said, "The only time it changed was when... when..." He started to go silent.
"Brian?" Matthew got up, "Is something wrong?"
"I don't know!" Brian exclaimed, "I've memorized everything we've ever seen, heard, and even felt, but I can't recall what happened to make our fur turn dark!"
"I don't think we've been the same over the past months." Matthew said, "Look back to when we first met Sera."
"Okay, and... what?" Brian stopped again. "You were light grey."
"So... when were we last white?" Lass asked
"I don't know." Brian said, "I can't recall it for some reason."
"Just keep looking for it, ponder." Matthew said, "I got to find out where I ran off to now, and find the change to all Tori again..."
"She's gonna 'ate us for wha happened." Lass said
"I know, but what more can we do?"
