It is entirely up to a Ladamme to protect her canton and to enforce the limits of her borders and maintain law therein. Methods do vary, but the simplest is to employ a small, standing army of trained militia who occupy their time patrolling, or keeping the peace in towns and cities. When a conflict with another canton arises, rather than engage in battle between one another's militaries, disputes are settled by knight champions. Use of the militia is reserved for weirdling attacks, raids by furies that have slipped over the Ashlight sea, or by undead hordes that emerge from the Gulewud.

A few of the Ladammes of Hessony are former Paladin crusaders of the order of the wall, who pushed eastward during the pioneering expansion to defend copperdark's growing borders, as their order's oath demands of them.
