Just to show I'm not sitting on my thumbs all this time. I never am sure what is good enough to upload, but I've seen people uploading wips to their accounts to tide the throngs over, so I figure, why not? This is part of some greater project I'm working on, probably over ambitious for me like these big projects usually are, but it's also an experiment in using photography as an aid in generating poses. Given this is like my best drawing of Duke EVER, I think so far the experiment is a success. Will be put in scraps if and when the final project is done.

That's cuz it is! I read in an illustration magazine that what some pros do, is that they photograph themselves in the pose they want to achieve. so I did the same, and drew the image right overtop of the photo in photoshop so the pose looked as natural and realistic as possible. Not to mention it also helped me greatly with the clothing folds, I always struggle with those. I guess some people would call that cheating, but if the final product looks good and the only thing I'm ripping this from is myself, I say it's all good!
I hear clothing folds are one of the most common problems illustrators face. And it makes sense. the human body can only contort itself into so many positions, unless the character happens to be a contortionist, some kind of mutant, or in considerable pain. Each pose reacts with the clothing in certain ways, but beyond that, there is also the thickness of the cloth, how many layers of clothing, what it's made of, even the prior or current action to consider when drawing clothing folds. that's so many variable to consider that even a professional can have difficulty deciding how the clothing folds should look.
