Maybe he loves the characters as much as the fans of the books and couldn't completely part ways with their story. I know reaching the end of the books had me feeling bittersweet that they had a happy ending and had gotten over their, honestly silly, arguments that drove them apart for a time. On the other hand their was a sadness that there wouldn't be more of them.
