In the olden days, so olden that science hadn't quite been invented yet, there were, of course, no mad scientists. There were, however, there were quite a few mad wizards.
To be clear, by "mad," we do not mean "angry" (although that probably fit fairly often as well). We mean undeniably this-guy-is-wearing-a-chamber-pot-on-his-head insane.
Just like their future scientisty counterparts, mad wizards would spend most of their days concocting ways in which they could further prove their insanity, including surrounding themselves with shelf upon shelf of creatures, and bits of creatures, preserved in suspensions for no apparent reason other than that "it looketh cool."
One such wizard, possibly slightly less mad than the others, found a way to make his insanity slightly profitable. It was discovered, most likely by accident, that a dragon embryo, once removed from the egg and floated in a particular magical fluid, would continue to live in a state of suspended animation. When kept close to a human's body, the dragon's magical nature would slowly seep in, granting the owner with what appeared to be unbelievable luck.
Of course, generally the luck ended when a mother dragon caught you with their child hanging in a bottle around your neck.
----
The bottle is approx. an inch tall, for size comparison.
