Maybe he bends physics a bit like Pinkie Pie to suit his needs. Earth ponies have fairly mysterious magic not well documented. :3

I actually had an idea for a story set in or around the Crystal Empire in that universe. Mostly involves a badass teenage Flurry Heart doing her best to keep hope alive in the settlements, turning assassination/murder attempts into gooey red paste, and trying to keep the peace between the crystal ponies and her step-father: King Sombra.

I really ought to get to work on that.

That sounds like an interesting story! I haven't read one with a pretty epic Flurry yet.
