Technically, if you go with kitsune, tanuki, kappa, tengu, and kamaitachi, you end up covering the majority of the eastern elements - though that would be of the fire-earth-water-metal-wood set.

But what would constitute a suitable 'wood' critter?

I think the tanuki and the kitsune are suitable for wood creatures.
The tengu is metal (or wind).
The oni or the kitsune are fire.
The kappa water.

Under most renditions I have drawn, written, and/or seen, tanuki are earth, kitsune fire, water is either the kappa or in more extreme cases samebito, wind and metal alternatingly as kamaitachi depending on how 'anthropomorphized' the subject weasesl are (are they using claws, or actually carrying little kama), then tengu most commonly wind as well (though sometimes also considered metal, or par of the 'spirit/void' catagory by Five Ring sortings), while onisu were generally not considered of any element, unless it was a specific, 'named' oni.

But new interpretations are always a welcome thing, in my eyes!
